We'll just have to agree to disagree. The reluctance to wear mask is not
exclusively a Trumper thing... but the bizarre anti-mask mindset and insistence that they don't help when there are endless studies which support the benefit of mask usage... is predominately a Trumper thing.
Where I do agree with you is that Trump coming out and saying "wear a mask" now wouldn't do any good. That genie can't be put back in the bottle. But if from early on he had stressed the importance of everyone acting responsibly, including wearing a masks when in public, and had stressed the seriousness of covid, I think his supporters would act differently.
It's just odd the degree to which you absolve the president of any responsibility to show leadership and encourage responsible behavior during the greatest public health crisis to face this country in 100 years. Honestly, if he had just been silent on Covid it would be one thing, but he has repeatedly mocked masks and repeatedly downplayed the seriousness of the covid. That has been counterproductive getting people in this country to act responsibly.
